Sports Injury
Playing sports, whether professionally or just for fun, offers a lot of benefits.
But sometimes, sports and related activities can result in muscle and joint problems; At PVC, our approach to the rehabilitation of sports injuries is quite often different than our approach to general rehabilitation. Don’t suffer from a sports-related injury when help is available. Call us to schedule your free consultation.
When those problems persist, they can impact not only your game, but also your overall quality of life. At PVC, our approach to the rehabilitation of sports injuries is quite often different than our approach to general rehabilitation.
The competitive nature of athletics typically necessitates a more aggressive approach, and the unique demands of a given sport often require the intervention to be “sport specific”.

NeuroKinetic Therapy
What happens if you hurt yourself as a result of back pains, neck pains or joint pains? Your body will respond by creating a compensation pattern or a new motor program where it utilizes available muscles and structures to protect affected body parts and keep you going.
This pattern will continue since the body has no mechanism for regaining the normal motor pattern again. For example, let’s say that you have a shoulder pain that is painful when you raise your shoulder up 90 degrees. Your body will “turn off” the muscles that elevate the shoulder while tightening the muscles that bring the shoulder down to prevent you from further elevation of the shoulder.
This will last even after the original trauma to the shoulder has resolved, as the body does not have a mechanism to reverse this motor pattern. This abnormal pattern will create an imbalance between muscles, and as a result, some muscles will be overworking, others will be under working making the problem more persistent and long-lasting.
So how can NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT) help to treat those compensation patterns?
- NKT is a form of manual therapy that uses the motor control theory to help with regaining the normal motor pattern of the affected body parts.
- Once the NKT practitioner detects the pattern, he/she will alert the body to the problem, then utilize manual therapy techniques to restore the balance between muscles and implement the correct motor pattern. The result will be immediate relief of pains and restoration of mobility. Our skilled physiotherapists are well trained in NK technique and they are able to bring in immediate relief of most of your pains. Call us at any time to schedule a free assessment.
Concussion Rehab
Concussions are a form of brain injury, sometimes referred as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
- The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines concussion as “a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.”
- Concussions vary from mild to severe and debilitating symptoms, and concussions from sports have become very common. Falls and accidents count for a major portion of concussion injuries as well.
- According to Health Canada, sports were a major reason for concussions amongst children. Playing hockey caused 52% of boys aged 10-14 to experience concussions, and 43% of boys aged 15-19 to as well. For girls, soccer caused 35% to experience concussions in the same age groups. Plus, according to the CDC, 1 in 5 visits to ER were caused by being struck by or against an object.
